St Lawrence Church Elsternwick

(The Church and Chapel spelling is Elsternwick, The East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Parish Council and The Royal Mail is Elstronwick)

We are a small grade II listed building dedicated to St. Lawrence in 1386 and was completely restored in 1875.  The pipe organ was installed in 1903.  There are two stained glass windows one to the East and one to the West.

We are a Chapelry annexed to Humbleton.  In 2000 we had a vestry, sacristy, porch and disabled toilet built onto the Church which is a great advantage when there is a baptism, wedding, funeral or social event.

We are a scattered rural area of farming, business people, commuters and retired people, unemployment in the area is low.  Elstronwick has approximately 97 residents, Danthorpe approximately 43 and Lelley approximately 84 which makes up the parish of Elstronwick.

We are in the South Holderness Deanery of the Diocese of York and part of the 20 village Churches since 2023.

Our services are the first and third Sunday 8.30 am Morning Prayer, second Sunday Book of Common Prayer Evensong and fourth Sunday Holy Communion Common Worship order 1, Summer 6.00pm and Winter 3.00 pm. On the fifth Sunday there is a United service of Holy Communion at 10.30 am taking turns with the Churches.

We have two hymn books Hymns Old & New and Hymns Ancient & Modern.

At Easter our services are Good Friday The Last Hour at 2.00 pm alternate with The Methodists.

Our Christmas Carol services is the Sunday before Christmas at 3.00pm.

Our Harvest services are united with The Methodists and alternate each year.

The Church is available for Baptisms, Weddings or Funerals, please contact Mary Jane Barker, Church Warden. 01964 670259

We raise our funds mainly through fundraising events during the year, which consists of Pudding Night and Christmas Fayre.

We hold joint events with the Methodist Chapel and are proud to have been able to have Paul Field & Dan Wheeler both professional singer songwriters with us to perform their album Rites of Passage Songs for the Journey.  We decorated the Church with Wedding dresses, Christening gowns and flowers for this very special event and we were very pleased the Church was full to capacity.  We have had Paul several times since to do concerts for us at The Chapel.
